At PASS Microsoft unveiled details of their big new addition to the Microsoft BI stack: BISM. It has caused quite a stir in the community, primarily because of concerns about where this leaves OLAP cubes and MDX.
Here is the official Microsoft response.
What Microsoft are saying is that less investment will go into OLAP cubes and MDX because it is a mature technology.
From my perspective, my only concern about all this is that Microsoft need to be clear about their roadmap, to avoid putting customers off. It will be a tricky balancing act to promote the new technologies without killing off the market for their very successful multidimensional OLAP engine.
BISM is clearly a very exciting new set of technologies that will open up many opportunities to expand BI throughout organisations, and if it proves to be a success this will be a very exciting time to be working with Microsoft BI. Watch this space!
